The Maze Runner - Movie Review

September 22, 2014

Verdict - "Dark, spooky and wicked. The Maze Runner is an imposing attempt."

What can we expect when a teenage best-selling novel twirls into a movie? An enchanting love story from an endearing couple? or our friendly homo sapiens known as vampires running around in a forest?

Every novel with the word "teen" in it will be converted into a movie these days and that's the latest trend my friend. Now, with such ludicrous impression on these movies, I thought the Maze Runner will be a debacle like many others and to my surprise, I actually liked this movie and I'm quite surprised with the outcome so far.

What made this movie unique when compared to others? Maybe because of the plot which was quite familiar with Hunger Games? I don't quite agree with that, the story was fascinating indeed. But then again, the dark and the somber vibe that was carried till the third act made me submerse into the movie completely as I was left with no objections.

Now with a quite a massive setup till the climax, we do expect something grand to happen which was favourable and gratifying. But things do change abruptly, nonsensical things happen and in the end the climax felt a bit juvenile. I don't say that it's horrible, but with a plot that was arranged to a great extent for ninety minutes was deflated with a mediocre acme.

This movie is for sure a bolt from the blue, Wes Ball known for his short films from the past, is an absolute newbie to the director's seat and he did a splendid job in my opinion, he took the movie seriously and didn't countenance any cheap teen jokes to ruin the experience.

On top, the cast in the movie is what got me worried about the movie, I thought that it'l be outlandish to watch them, but they smacked me out completely. Dylan O'Brien was remarkable in the movie accompanied by the complete cast including Blake Cooper, Thomas Sangster and Aml Ameen. Also a special mention to Will Poulter for his amazing performance as a depraved heel.

Furtherless, The Maze Runner is an impressive movie for me, I went with completely zero expectations and I found myself enjoying the movie till the grand finale and as I mentioned above the climax was a bit stale and ordinary. Aside from that, I'm pumped up for it's sequel and I never thought I would say that.

My Rating - 3.25/5
Grade - B (Entertaining! With noticeable flaws)
